The County of Maui Department of Water Supply has issued a Stage 1 water shortage for consumers in the Upcountry service area, which includes restrictions surrounding water use. The Upcountry area includes Makawao, Upper and Lower Kula, Haiku, Haliimaile, Pukalani, Kokomo, Kaupakalua, Ulumalu, Keokea, Ulupalakua and Kanaio. Officials say that despite recent rainfall in the area, the rainfall is not enough to maintain sufficient water levels.
