Maui County officials have announced that Crater Road will be closed for a week starting Saturday morning due to safety concerns related to the 574-acre Crater Road fire in Kula. The closure will remain in effect until 6 p.m. on August 3, specifically around Mile Marker 3.

The fire, which has affected the upper Kula area, is currently 80 percent contained. Crater Road had been closed since July 10 but was briefly reopened on July 24 at noon. However, ongoing safety issues necessitated the re-closure, according to the Department of Fire and Public Safety. Authorities expect that the work carried out during this weeklong closure will make it possible to reopen the road safely.

For those planning to visit Haleakalā National Park, which falls under federal jurisdiction, information on park access and hours can be found on the official National Park Service website.

For further updates on the Crater Road fire, residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up for alerts from the Maui Emergency Management Agency and to follow the County of Maui and the Maui Fire Department on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
